Symptoms of ADD or ADHD

Signs and Symptoms You Should Know


Are you concerned that one of your family members or perhaps a friend may be struggling with ADHD? Every individual is different, but there are common signs and symptoms that the person of whom you are concerned may exhibit that could be indicative of a problem that needs treatment.


ADD or ADHD is a diagnosis given to children and adults with:

  1. Attention deficit only (ADD) or

  2. Hyperactivity and impulsivity combined with attention deficit (ADHD)

 

The following is a list of behaviors found with these disorders. Rarely would all apply to a single individual.

 

  • Forgetful

  • Disorganized
  • Inattention to detail
  • Difficulty sustaining attention
  • Easily distracted
  • Losing and misplacing needed objects
  • Often not completing projects
  • Going from one task to the next activity without finishing the first
  • Lack of interest in tasks requiring mental focus
  • Listens poorly when spoken to
  • Difficulty following instructions
  • Irritability
  • Impatient

 

ADHD may also include these symptoms:

  • Excessive motor activity

  • Often being on the go

  • Climbing and running excessively

  • Fidgeting or squirming

  • Getting of seat in class often

  • Excessive talking

  • Difficulty doing things quietly

  • Interrupting or blurting out answers

  • Intrusiveness with poor boundaries

  • Difficulty taking turns
